“What complication?” I asked.

“My office has been monitoring local police band radio transmissions in your area,” Vance said. “We picked up a report ten minutes ago. Deputy Sophia Reyes’s cruiser was found abandoned near the old salt marshes.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean, abandoned?” I asked.

“The driver’s side window was shattered,” Vance said. “There was blood on the steering wheel. Her service weapon was still in the vehicle.”

“They took her,” I said.

“If we move in with federal warrants now, Wade and your mother will realize they are trapped,” Vance said. “If Reyes is alive, they will eliminate her to destroy the chain of custody on those files. We need her testimony to make this stick.”

“Where would they take her?” I asked.

“There is an abandoned boatyard near the southern inlet,” Vance said. “It’s registered under a holding company owned by your family. We believe Wade uses it for off-the-books storage.”

“I know where it is,” I said.

“Daniel, listen to me,” Vance said. “My tactical team is in Boston. It will take us at least two hours to get assets on the ground. Do not go there alone.”
