The Silent Mirror and the Lies That Broke My Family
I stared at the small piece of plastic.
This was the second card.
Emily had hidden it here, in the one room she knew Margaret rarely entered.
I slipped the card into my front pocket, zipping it shut.
I knew what this had to be.
The first card had the financial records, the proof of Caleb’s debts and Owen Vale’s bribes.
But this one was different.
This was Emily’s insurance policy.
She must have recorded her final days, perhaps even the night she died.
If she had set up a hidden camera in her room, she would have captured everything.
She would have captured the needle.
She would have captured the person holding it.
My mother’s face.
I closed my eyes for a brief second, the image burning into my mind.
I had to get to a computer.
I had to see what was on this card before I confronted Margaret.
The sound of a car door slamming outside broke the silence.
I hurried to the window, pulling the curtain back slightly.
Down in the driveway, a black cruiser was parked.
