“There are still the estate documents.”

My grandmother’s estate had been locked away in a safe-deposit box in Richmond.

Helen had kept the key and the legal power of attorney since my grandmother died three years ago.

Those documents contained the truth about the family land and the trust left to me.

Without them, the legal victory would be incomplete.

We entered the side office adjacent to the ballroom.

General Drummond followed us, closing the door behind him.

The room was quiet, furnished with dark leather chairs and a heavy mahogany desk.

Through the window, I could see the patrol car driving away, its tires splashing through the deep puddles.

Drummond sat behind the desk.

“NCIS will hold her at the base brig for processing tonight,” Drummond said.

“Because it involves military benefits, the federal prosecutor is handling the arraignment tomorrow morning.”

“And Michael?” I asked.

“He will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation,” Drummond said.

“His career is effectively over.”

I nodded, accepting the news without satisfaction.

“I need those estate documents, General,” I said.

“They are in her safe at the house in Virginia Beach.”
