Turner took a step between me and Hayes, his finger pointing directly at my face.
“Chief Hayes, you will disregard this civilian’s statements,” Turner ordered.
“You will escort Dr. Mitchell to the holding area immediately for interfering with naval operations.”
Hayes did not move. He did not look at Turner.
“Chief, did you hear me?” Turner raised his voice, his face reddening further.
“I heard you, Captain,” Hayes said softly.
“Then execute the order,” Turner barked.
“With respect, Captain,” Hayes said, shifting his weight slightly, “Dr. Mitchell’s credentials carry a directive from the Joint Chiefs regarding the integrity of the submarine program.”
“I am the base commander!” Turner shouted, the sound echoing off the metal walls.
“And this base has a leak,” Hayes said, his tone flat.
He looked at me, waiting for my instruction.
“Lieutenant Carter,” I said, turning to the nervous junior officer.
Carter jumped slightly at the sound of his name.
“Yes, Doctor?” he whispered.
“I need you to take two men and secure the maintenance corridors leading to the dry dock,” I said.
