“Maren,” she gasped, her voice shaking so hard I could barely understand her. “Maren, please tell me you’re still at the base.”

“I’m not at the base, Mom,” I said, keeping my voice flat.

She looked at the gray cinderblock wall behind me on the camera feed, her eyes widening in sudden realization.

“Where are you?” she whispered.

“I’m at the county sheriff’s office,” I said. “They just arrested Arthur Vance.”

My mother covered her mouth with both hands, a soft, strangled sob escaping her throat.

“Oh, God,” she murmured. “Dorian said he had everything under control. He said it was just a local dispute.”

“Dorian lied to you,” I said. “And you lied for him. I know about the forged signatures, Mom. I know you signed the disclosures.”

“He told me we were going to lose the house,” she cried, her tears spilling over her manicured cheeks. “He said if we didn’t get the mountain land sold, the bank would take everything. I did it for Brielle, Maren. She has so much debt, and—”

“You did it for yourselves,” I said. “You tried to destroy my father’s legacy for a quick payout.”
