Santo moved quickly, his heavy hand catching my shoulder.

He reached down and tore the apron away from my waist, snapping the cloth strings.

The heavy ledger fell to the hardwood floor with a loud thud.

It slid across the polished wood, stopping near Marcus’s feet.

Luca looked down at the book.

His chest rose and fell rapidly.

“The ledger,” Luca whispered.

“How did you get that?”

“Alexander kept it in the safe,” I said.

“And he gave me the combination.”

This was another lie, but Luca did not know that.

He knew that if Marcus got his hands on that ledger, his life was over.

The ledger contained the records of every dollar Luca had stolen from the family.

It had the names of the dock workers he paid off.

It had the offshore bank accounts in Panama.

Marcus bent down and picked up the ledger.

He placed it on the desk next to Mrs. Conti’s confession.

“It seems the power of attorney is the least of your worries, Luca,” Marcus said.

“This is enough to put you away for the rest of your life.”
