“What happened?” Sofia cried out in the dark.
“The storm must have taken out the main line,” Marcus said.
I heard the sound of someone shuffling near the doorway.
“Nobody move,” Luca’s voice boomed through the darkness. “Guard, cover the maid.”
A heavy hand grabbed my arm again, dragging me back into the corner.
“I can’t see to give the injection,” Dr. Voss said, her voice sharp with frustration. “I need light right now.”
I remembered the silver flashlight I had seen in the drawer of the hallway table earlier.
“There is a flashlight in the hall cupboard,” I said, my voice barely audible over the wind outside.
“Get it,” Marcus said.
“No,” Luca countered. “The maid stays here. Guard, go find a light.”
“I am not leaving this door,” the guard said from the darkness near my shoulder.
“I’ll go,” Sofia said.
I heard her footsteps moving toward the hallway, her hands scraping against the wall to find her way.
