Among the clutter of water glasses and silver spoons, a small amber glass bottle lay on its side.

Luca reached out and picked it up with two fingers.

He held it up to the light of the green shaded lamp.

“What is this?” Luca asked, turning the bottle around.

No one answered him.

“It’s Alexander’s heart medication,” Sofia said, her voice shaking as she stepped closer. “He takes it every evening.”

Luca uncorked the bottle and tipped it over his open palm.

Nothing came out.

“It’s empty,” Luca said, his eyes shifting slowly toward me. “It was filled yesterday. I saw the delivery myself.”

He walked over to me, holding the empty bottle inches from my face.

“Where did the pills go, Nina?” he asked.

“I don’t know, sir,” I whispered, keeping my hands clasped in front of my apron. “I only brought him his water.”

“You brought him his water, and then he collapsed,” Luca said, his voice rising. “And now his medicine is completely gone.”

He turned to Marcus and Sofia, gesturing with the empty bottle.
