“You didn’t know Eleanor had them,” Alexander said. “You thought you destroyed every record when you cleaned out her desk after the funeral.”
“Alexander, listen to me,” Celeste said, stepping toward him. “This is a setup. Look at her. Why would a simple maid have access to all of this?”
“Because Eleanor trusted me,” I said quietly.
“She knew she was dying,” I added. “And she knew she couldn’t trust anyone in her social circle.”
The sergeant turned to one of his officers who had just walked up from the cruisers.
“Run a check on the registration of that post office box,” the sergeant ordered. “And contact the Basel office of Vance Laboratories. I want a verification of this manifest.”
“Yes, sir,” the officer said, turning back toward his patrol car.
Vivian looked between Celeste and Alexander, her face pale under the flashing red lights.
“I had nothing to do with this,” Vivian said quickly, her voice high and panicked. “I didn’t even know Celeste was shipping things to the village.”
“Shut up, Vivian,” Celeste hissed.
