“It is nothing,” Richard said, but his voice was thin and reedy.
“That is the chemical agent from the depot,” I said, my hand instinctively dropping to my side.
My service weapon was locked in the security office, leaving my holster empty.
“The one listed on the stolen inventory sheets,” I added, keeping my eyes locked on him.
Colonel Hayes stepped forward, his polished dress shoes stopping inches from the spilled powder.
“Captain Brooks, you are out of line,” Hayes said.
His tone was commanding, but his eyes were scanning the room, calculating the exits.
“Am I, Colonel?” I asked. “Or are you just worried about who else saw those manifests?”
Madison moved toward the packet, her face completely pale under the chandelier light.
