The Silent Colonel and the Downfall of the Monroe Family Empire
The terminal screen suddenly went green.
A list of directories appeared on the monitor.
The folder names were clear: *Aegis_Phase_II*, *Project_Vanguard*, and *Beijing_Transfers*.
“We have the files, Colonel,” Miller said.
“And the logs showing the transmission attempts.”
“Pack them up,” I said.
“Everything goes to the field office.”
Patricia finally turned around from the window.
Her eyes were wide and wild.
“This is a mistake,” Patricia said.
“We have friends in Washington. We have influence.”
“Your friends are already being questioned, Patricia,” Vance said.
“The Senator from Georgia is currently meeting with the FBI.”
Patricia’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

The wealth, the name, the influence—all of it was being packed into black plastic cases.
“Grant Monroe, you are under arrest,” one of the agents said, stepping forward with handcuffs.
“For conspiracy to commit espionage and theft of government property.”
The cold metal clicked around Grant’s wrists.
He did not fight. He looked down at his hands, confused.
“Allison,” Grant said, his voice barely a whisper.
“Please.”
I did not answer him. I turned away.
