“The child is the sole beneficiary of the secondary Crane fund,” Margaret explained to the board.

“If Nathan has custody of the child, he controls the monthly distribution until she turns twenty-five,” Margaret said.

Mr. Vance shook his head in disgust.

“That is monstrous,” Mrs. Gable murmured.

“He was going to file for sole custody,” Sloane said, the words spilling out of her now like water from a broken dam.

“He told me he already had the medical records ready,” she said.

“What medical records?” I demanded, taking a step toward her.

“He’s been documenting your mood swings,” Sloane said.

“He’s been taking photos of your prescription bottles,” she said.

“I don’t take prescriptions,” I said.

“He bought them online,” Sloane said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

“He put your name on the labels,” she said.

“He’s been putting things in your tea, too,” Sloane added, her eyes darting to the kitchen stove.

“Just enough to make you dizzy,” she said.

“Just enough so you would fall, or forget things, or look confused in front of your doctors,” she said.
