“Eleven times,” Margaret said, her voice dry and precise. “While you were at the clinic.”

“She was in my home, using my family’s money to prepare for my child’s displacement,” I said.

“And she was doing so with the active assistance of your husband,” Margaret added, tapping the photo of Sloane in my coat.

She leaned back, her chair making a faint leather creak.

I knew the clause, but I wanted to hear her say it.
