“We will do it tomorrow evening.”
“I will prepare the formal audit reports,” Margaret replied.
“Be careful, Catherine. Do not let him suspect anything.”
I slid the phone into my pocket and hid the folder under the mattress.
Just then, a light tap sounded on the bedroom door.
“Catherine?” Nathan’s voice called out.
“Are you in there?”
I took a deep breath, smoothing down my cardigan.
I walked over and unlocked the door.
Nathan stood in the hallway, holding two cups of tea.
He smiled, but his eyes were guarded.
“I brought you some chamomile,” he said, handing me a mug.
“The rain is getting worse.”
“Thank you,” I said, keeping my voice steady.
“We need to talk about the nursery budget,” he said, stepping into the room without invitation.
“Sloane says the plasterwork is going to cost more than we thought.”
“We need to authorize another transfer from the trust tomorrow.”
I looked at the warm tea in my hands.
