“I need to talk to you about the future, Hunter,” Lorenzo said quietly.

He walked over to the small armchair near the window and sat down.

I sat on the edge of the daybed across from him.

“Mrs. Bellamy is gone,” Lorenzo said.

“And the agency that sent Angela Pierce is being investigated,” he said.

“I cannot trust anyone from the outside again,” Lorenzo said.

“I understand,” I said.

“I want you to stay,” Lorenzo said, looking directly into my eyes.

“Not as a maid,” he said.

“Not as temporary help,” he added.

“I want to appoint you as Leo’s permanent, legal guardian,” Lorenzo said.

I looked at him, my heart skipping a beat.

“A guardian?” I asked.

“You would have full authority over his care, his medical decisions, and his household,” Lorenzo said.

“You would answer only to me,” he said.

“And if anything should happen to me, you would have sole custody,” Lorenzo added.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a document, placing it on the small table between us.

“My attorneys drafted this tonight,” Lorenzo said.
