“Vanessa Cross was the operations liaison back then,” Miller said.
“She was his administrative assistant before she became Cole’s mistress.”
The realization hit me like a cold wave.
Vanessa didn’t just help Cole hide the money.
She knew how the system worked because she had watched my father build it.
“Where is she now?” I asked.
“They have her in the holding cells in the basement of the tribunal offices,” Miller said.
“General Albright ordered her detained for questioning this morning.”
“I need to see her,” I said.
“Eleanor, that’s restricted,” Miller warned. “Cole’s people are everywhere.”
“I don’t care,” I said, straightening my jacket.
I tucked my phone into my pocket.
“Give me the ledger,” I said.
Miller hesitated, his hand resting on the leather cover.
“If they catch you with this, they’ll lock you up too,” he said.
“They won’t catch me,” I said, reaching out.
He let go of the book, and I slid it into my leather shoulder bag.
