The hallway was dead silent except for the dripping of rainwater on the entry rug.

Rose held out her hand, offering me the missing piece of the letter.

“Read it,” Rose said softly. “Read what they did to us.”

I reached out, my fingers brushing against the cold, wet paper.

Before I could take it, the phone in my pocket began to vibrate once again.

The screen lit up, displaying Megan’s name.

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen as everyone in the room watched me.

The silence in the foyer was suffocating.

I slid the bar to answer and pressed the phone to my ear.

“Megan?” I said, my voice barely a whisper.

A sharp, terrified gasp came through the line.

“They’re coming for me,” Megan cried, her voice shaking with terror.

I gripped the phone tighter, my eyes locked on Rose’s green gaze.

“Who is coming, Megan?” I asked.

“Ethan,” she sobbed. “He has the real deed, and he’s not alone.”

The line suddenly went dead with a harsh, static click.

I lowered the phone, my heart dropping into my stomach.
