Megan stared at him, her face turning pale under the dim light bulb.
“You brought those men here,” Megan said. “To our family home.”
“It’s not your home yet,” Ethan said. “Not until your sister signs.”
“You used me,” Megan whispered.
Ethan didn’t look at her. “I did what I had to do for our future.”
“No,” Megan said. “You used my pregnancy to get Aunt Claire to trust you. You made me ask her for the safe combination.”
She took another step back, her back hitting the dusty plaster wall.
“You told me we needed the original trust documents to verify the boundaries,” Megan said. “But you just wanted to destroy them.”
“They’re useless documents anyway,” Ethan said, his jaw twitching. “Rose Bennett Voss has been dead to this family for thirty years. She has no right to this place.”
“Rose is alive, Ethan,” I said, watching his eyes. “And she knows what you did.”
“She has no proof,” Ethan said. “The original ledger is gone.”
“It’s not gone,” Daniel said. “I have the copies. The bank records from 1994 show exactly how much money Claire took from the trust.”
