“But you were going to steal my home,” I said, walking up to him.

“I was desperate,” Ethan said, looking up at me with pleading eyes.

“Claire had the banks breathing down my neck,” Ethan said.

“She controlled my loans,” Ethan said. “She bought them out through her holding company.”

“She owned you,” I said.

“Yes,” Ethan whispered.

“She told me if I didn’t marry you and get the deed, she would ruin me financially,” Ethan said.

“So you played the part of the loving fiancé,” I said, my voice shaking.

“I grew to care about you,” Ethan said, reaching his hand toward me.

I stepped back, disgusted by his touch.

“Don’t,” I said.

Megan walked over to my side, her face flushed with anger. “You are pathetic, Ethan.”

“And what about Aunt Claire?” Megan asked, looking at Daniel. “Where is she now?”

“She’s trying to cover her tracks,” Daniel said.

“She knows the police are looking into the shell company,” Daniel said.

“She’s likely on her way here to destroy the original trust documents,” Daniel said.

“The ones hidden in this house,” Rose said.
