She stared at the bottom of the sheet.
“That’s my name,” she whispered.
“He forged it, Kelsey,” I said. “Just like he tried to forge my signature on the land transfer.”
Trevor took three quick steps toward her, his hands raised in surrender.
“Kelsey, baby, listen to me,” he said. “It was temporary. I was going to put it back as soon as the land cleared escrow.”
“You took my inheritance?” Kelsey asked, her voice rising to a screech.
“I invested it!” Trevor shouted back, his face turning red under the headlights. “For us! For the future!”
“You stole from me!” she screamed.
She threw the folder at his face.
The damp papers burst out, scattering across the wet hood of the SUV and sticking to the glass.
One sheet clung to the windshield, the blurred columns of numbers lit from behind.
“I did it for the family!” Trevor yelled, grabbing her arm. “Your father knew we needed the leverage!”
Kelsey pulled away from him with a violent jerk.
“My father?” she asked, her voice suddenly cracking. “What does Dad have to do with this?”
