An hour later, the female officer, Officer Vance, returned to the Millers’ house.
Her boots were wet, and her face was grave.
“We found your husband, Mrs. Vance,” she said.
“Is he… did he run?” I asked.
“No. He was sitting in the living room. He didn’t resist arrest,” she said. “But we found something else. In the basement room.”
My heart stopped. “Eleanor?”
“Yes. She’s alive, but she requires immediate medical attention. We’ve called an ambulance,” Officer Vance explained. “And we found medical supplies that shouldn’t be in a residential home. Highly regulated sedatives.”
The officer looked at me closely.
“We also found your phone on the floor. The recording you made is safe. It’s being logged as evidence.”
I let out a long breath I felt like I had been holding for years.
“There’s more,” I said, my voice barely audible. “In Lily’s room. Under her bed.”
Officer Vance frowned. “What’s in the bedroom?”
“I don’t know exactly,” I admitted. “But Lily has been scared of her bed for weeks. Nathan was obsessed with that room. He rebuilt the frame himself.”
