His face went instantly rigid, the warmth vanishing from his eyes.

“Daniel?” I asked, my grip tightening on Lucas’s hand.

He stared at the display, his thumb hovering over the screen.

The call was coming from a private, unlisted number.

He swiped the screen and pressed the phone to his ear.

“Who is this?” Daniel asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

He listened for a long, silent second.

I watched his knuckles turn white as he gripped the device.

“What do you mean?” Daniel asked.

The caller on the other end must have spoken only a few words.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone, his eyes wide and completely vacant.

“Daniel, what is it?” I asked, a new wave of panic rising in my chest.

He looked at me, his voice barely audible over the wind.

“It was the clinic,” Daniel said.

“The records… they said there was a third container.”

“Evelyn did not just have twins.”

“There was a third child, Claire.”

“And someone just picked him up from the private facility in Switzerland.”
