Daniel stood up, letting go of my hand.

“Ruth? What is it?” he asked.

“What are you doing here? Who is with the boys?”

“The nanny from the agency is with them,” Ruth said.

She stepped into the room and closed the door tightly behind her.

She looked at me, then at Daniel.

“We have a problem,” she said.

“A very serious problem.”

She pulled a thick manila envelope from inside her coat.

“A courier delivered this to the estate twenty minutes ago,” Ruth said.

“I drove here immediately.”

Daniel took the envelope from her hands.

“What is this?” he asked.

“It is from the board of directors,” Ruth said.

“And from your uncle’s legal team.”

Daniel tore open the envelope.

He pulled out several pages of legal documents with blue backing paper.

His face turned from pale to an angry, flushed red as his eyes scanned the text.

“What do they want?” I asked, sitting up in bed.

The monitor beeped, but I ignored it.

“They are filing an emergency challenge,” Daniel said.

His voice was tight, cold with rage.
