The trooper, whose badge read Miller, looked at Harris, then at me.
“Is this true, ma’am?” Miller asked.
“He was downloading my private server to his personal tablet,” I said, holding up the device.
“He’s been working with Julian for years to cover up the stalking and extortion.”
Julian was sitting in the back of a cruiser parked in the driveway.
Through the glass, I could see his face, pale and distorted by the flashing lights.
He was screaming something, his fists pounding against the reinforced partition.
“We’ll take custody of the device, ma’am,” Trooper Miller said, taking the tablet from my hand with a gloved finger.
“There is a backup of the transfer log on my secure cloud,” I said. “I’ve already sent a copy to the state attorney’s office.”
Harris let out a dry, humorless laugh.
“You think you’re safe now, Clara?” Harris said as Miller led him toward the door.
“I am safer than you are,” I said.
The troopers escorted Harris down the front steps and into a waiting vehicle.
The driveway was a circus of noise, gravel, and flashing lights.
