“Detective Harris,” Vance said, his voice loud and steady in the small space.
Harris did not jump.
He slowly turned his head, his face illuminated by the cold blue light.
“Vance,” Harris said, his voice completely calm. “What are you doing down here?”
“I could ask you the same thing, sir,” Vance said, keeping his weapon lowered but ready.
“I’m securing the suspect’s digital assets,” Harris said. “We need to make sure she doesn’t wipe the evidence.”
“The suspect is Julian,” I said, stepping out from behind Vance. “And you are stealing my life.”
Harris looked at me, his eyes dead and unblinking.
“You’re confused, Clara,” Harris said. “The trauma of the evening is getting to you.”

I pointed at the black cable connecting his tablet to my rack.

Vance’s head turned slightly, his eyes darting between me and the detective.
