“The transfer document is right there.”

“Signed by my lovely wife, and witnessed by our public relations director.”

I looked at Sloane.

She wouldn’t look at me.

Her eyes were fixed on the floor, her face pale under the office lights.

“Sloane,” I said. “You know that signature is a forgery.”

Sloane swallowed hard. Her throat clicked in the quiet room.

“It… it has your signature, Cassandra,” Sloane said, her voice thin and lacking its usual sharp edge.

“You’re committing a federal crime, Sloane,” Sarah said.

“When the forensic accountants audit these accounts tomorrow, they will trace every IP address.”

“They will see who authorized the transfer, and they will see who witnessed the forged document.”

“You won’t just lose your job. You will go to prison.”

Sloane’s eyes darted to Gavin, her chest rising and falling in quick, shallow breaths.

“Gavin said the legal team had it covered,” Sloane whispered.

“Gavin is protecting himself,” I said, taking a step toward her.

“He will let you take the fall for the forgery the second the feds get involved.”
