“He was an old man who was going to ruin our future,” Rachel said, her voice rising. “I did what had to be done for this family.”

“For yourself,” I corrected.

She lunged forward, trying to push past us toward the corridor.

Alexander stepped in front of her, blocking her path.

“Get out of my way!” she screamed, swinging her heavy leather briefcase.

The edge of the briefcase caught Alexander across the cheek, leaving a bright red scratch.

I grabbed her arm, twisting it behind her back until she dropped the briefcase.

It clattered against the marble floor, bursting open.

Stacks of legal documents and bank statements spilled across the polished stone.

At the top of the pile was a certificate bearing the seal of the United States Treasury.

“The trust,” I whispered.

Rachel struggled against my grip, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

“You can’t prove anything!” she hissed. “The King won’t let this scandal get out. He cares too much about his reputation.”

“You underestimate my father,” a voice boomed from the end of the hallway.
