A bullet shattered the high window at the end of the stable aisle.
Glass rained down onto the concrete floor.
The young guard cursed, dropping to one knee and aiming his weapon at the door.
“We need to move,” the guard yelled. “They’re at the perimeter fence.”
Dante did not look at the shattered window.
He kept his eyes on me.
“Why tell me this now?” he asked.
“Because Vance killed my brother,” I said.
My voice was quieter than the gunfire, but he heard me.
“And because I am tired of running.”
Dante looked at the monitor one last time.
Two of his men were firing from behind a stone fountain in the courtyard.
The tactical team was advancing with heavy steel shields.
“Marco,” Dante said into his collar mic.
“Marco is not answering, boss,” a voice crackled through the receiver.
“He’s gone,” I said. “He’s the one who leaked your location.”
“And he’s the one who let them know about Vesper’s leg.”
