The name Vance made the blood run cold in my veins.

“Charles Vance,” I whispered, the name tasting like ash.

Dante glanced at me, his eyes dark and searching. “You know him.”

“He owned the training facility where I used to work,” I said, looking out the window at the passing streetlights. “He is a monster. He ruins horses, and he ruins people.”

“He is working with Kroll,” Dante said, his voice flat.

“Kroll?” I asked.

“The man who wants my territory,” Dante explained. “He has been trying to find a weakness in my security for months. Marco was his inside man.”

We turned onto a dark, empty highway, the tires humming against the wet asphalt.

“Vance wants you back,” Dante said. “He told Kroll you have information on his old financial records. Secrets that could destroy his entire operation.”

“I do,” I said. “I took a ledger when I ran away. I hid it where he would never find it.”

“And Vance knows it,” Dante said. “He offered Kroll his entire network of northern smuggling routes in exchange for your return. Marco was the one who made the connection.”
