The Retribution of Evelyn Vale and the Fall of Hartwell House
“Every single document regarding the fraudulent transfer of Vale House assets has Sloane’s signature as the sole managing director.”
Sloane’s breath hitched.
She took a half-step toward the desk, her eyes widening.
“What?” she whispered.
“The restructuring paperwork names you as the primary officer responsible for the acquisition,” I said.
“If the federal regulators look into the forgery, they won’t look at Carter or Vivian.”
“They will look at the person who signed the filing documents,” I added.
Sloane turned her head slowly toward Carter.
“Carter, you told me my name was only on the preliminary drafts,” she said.
“You said the final filings would go through the family trust.”
Carter let out a short, irritated breath.
“We had to make some adjustments, Sloane,” he said, not looking her in the eye.
“It was the only way to shield the family assets from the initial audit.”
“To shield *your* family,” Sloane said.
Her voice was rising, losing its professional restraint.
“You put my name on the regulatory filings for a forged acquisition?”
“We will protect you, Sloane,” Vivian said, her voice sharp and commanding.
