“The files Emily took,” the Senator said. “They are on there.”

“Everything is on here,” I said. “The offshore accounts. The bribes. The land deals.”

Charles made a sound, a short, choked gasp.

“That is private property,” Charles said. “It’s proprietary information.”

“It’s evidence of grand larceny and treason, Charles,” the Senator said, his voice flat.

“Treason?” Charles whispered.

The Senator did not look at him.

He kept his eyes on mine.

“What do you want, Arthur?” the Senator asked.

“My daughter,” I said.

“Where is she?” the Senator asked.

“She’s inside,” I said. “With Ryan.”

The Senator closed his eyes for a brief second.

When he opened them, he looked very old.

“Ryan is a fool,” the Senator said.

“He’s an abusive coward,” I said. “And he is going to let her walk out of that house with me.”

“And if he doesn’t?” Charles asked, stepping forward again, his anger flaring back up. “This is my estate. You are surrounded by armed guards.”

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a small, black transmitter.

It was no larger than a key fob.
