“General, Daniel hasn’t just been spending his salary,” Sarah said, her tone dropping slightly. “He’s been systematically transferring funds out of your joint household reserve for the past eighteen months.”

I felt a cold sensation settle in the pit of my stomach, though my face remained expressionless.

“How much?” I asked.

“Over eighty thousand dollars,” Sarah said. “And it wasn’t going to household expenses or Ava’s school.”

I looked out the window at the dark pine trees passing by along the highway.

“Where was it going, Sarah?” I asked.

“We tracked the destination accounts,” Sarah said. “They belong to a private debt consolidation firm registered in Delaware.”

“Daniel didn’t have any major debts when we married,” I said.

“He does now,” Sarah replied. “And based on these transaction logs, he was trying to hide them before you noticed.”

I gripped the phone a little tighter, the silence in the SUV stretching out between us.

“There’s more,” Sarah said, her voice dropping even lower.

“Tell me,” I said.

“We found a pending transfer,” Sarah said. “A request for a fifty-thousand-dollar withdrawal from your personal trust, initiated yesterday afternoon.”
