Sloane let out a shaky breath and leaned back in her chair.
“You need to know something else,” she said.
I paused, my hand still resting on the pocket containing the drive.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Nolan knows the ship is sinking,” she said.
“He called his mother, Marjorie, about an hour ago.”
“He told her to pack her bags.”
“He is trying to liquidate the remaining assets from the Civic Group’s secondary account.”
“He plans to take the cash and leave the state before your father’s lawyers can freeze the assets.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I kept my face expressionless.
“Where is he now?” I asked.
“He’s at the main branch of the bank downtown,” Sloane said.
“He is trying to withdraw the emergency reserve fund.”
“It’s nearly eight hundred thousand dollars.”
“And then he is going to the hospital to get Maisie.”
I stood up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.
“He won’t get past the security I set up,” I said, though a cold dread began to pool in my stomach.
