The Price of Stealing from the Quiet Daughter of a Powerful Empire
I knew Nolan’s corporate structures, and this was not one of them.
I picked up my phone and dialed Marcus, my father’s chief financial investigator.
He answered on the second ring.
“Evelyn,” he said. “Your father told me to expect your call.”
“I just sent you a PDF file,” I said.
“It came from an encrypted address.”
“I need you to look at page four.”
I heard the rapid click of his keyboard on the other end of the line.
“I see it,” Marcus said after a moment.
“Apex Meridian,” I said. “Is that Nolan’s?”
“I’m running the registry search now,” Marcus said.
“It will take some time to pierce the shell companies behind it, but I have contacts in the Caymans.”
“Do it quickly,” I said. “And Marcus, look into Sloane Barrett.”
“Nolan’s operations director?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said. “She sent me this file.”
“She claims Nolan doesn’t know she sent it.”
“Why would she betray him now?”
“Maybe she is trying to save herself,” Marcus suggested.
“Or maybe there is another reason,” I said.
“Check her personal accounts.”
