“She likes luxury too much to go to prison for him,” I said. “She knows exactly what Nolan is doing.”

My phone rang again.

This time, the screen showed a number I recognized.

It was Nolan.

I hesitated, my finger hovering over the screen.

My father nodded slowly. “Answer it. Let’s hear what he has to say.”

I pressed the speaker button.

“Evelyn?” Nolan’s voice sounded strained, but he was trying to maintain his usual confident tone.

“I’m here, Nolan,” I said, keeping my voice flat and even.

“Where are you?” he demanded. “I went to the hospital. They said you checked out hours ago. You took my daughter.”

“I took *our* daughter to a safe place,” I said.

“You had no right to leave without telling me,” he said, his tone sharpening. “We are married, Evelyn. We need to talk about the settlement agreement.”

“The agreement I supposedly signed?” I asked.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.

I could hear the faint sound of traffic in the background.
