The Price of Silence and the Secrets Served at the Table
Derek laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that echoed in the high ceiling of the dining room.
“You are protecting her?” Derek asked his father.
“After what she did to our family?”
“She saved our family from being completely ruined by your greed,” Arthur said.
“She gave me the chance to handle this before it became a public spectacle.”
“It is already a public spectacle,” Derek said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone again.
The screen was lighting up with missed calls and messages.
“The office is texting me,” he said, his voice dropping to a panicked whisper.
“They are asking why there are federal agents at the downtown branch.”
“Because they are seizing your office computer, Derek,” Annika said.
She adjusted her glasses, her face completely expressionless.
“The warrant was signed two hours ago.”
Derek stared at his phone, his face draining of color.
He looked at the screen as if the words on it were written in a foreign language.
“No,” he whispered.
“They can’t do that.”
“It is done,” Arthur said.
He walked to the window and looked out into the driveway.
