The Price of Silence and the Secrets Served at the Table
“Roger doesn’t think it is a misunderstanding,” Arthur said. “He says the documents are authentic.”
“They are incomplete,” Derek said. “They don’t show the offsetting transactions.”
I walked over to the side table and poured myself a glass of water from a crystal pitcher.
The water was cold, the ice clinking softly against the glass.
“They show exactly what you did, Derek,” I said, turning to face them.
Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her throat.
“Monica, please,” Eleanor said. “This is family business. You should not interfere.”
“It is my business too, Eleanor,” I said. “Since my name is on several of those joint accounts.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed as he looked at me.
“What do you mean, your name is on them?” Arthur asked.
“Derek used our joint household accounts to move some of the funds before transferring them offshore,” I said.
The room went entirely silent, save for the crackle of the wood in the fireplace.
Derek took a step toward me, his fingers curling into fists at his sides.
“That is a lie,” Derek said, his voice low and dangerous.
