“I have the physical ledgers right here,” Derek said, his voice rising slightly. “I can show you the offsetting entries.”
“We don’t want your private ledgers, Derek,” Marcus said. “We want the certified bank statements from the receiving institution.”
I began to walk down the stairs, one slow step at a time.
The heels of my shoes made a distinct, rhythmic click against the wood.
Derek looked up, his eyes locking onto mine as I reached the bottom step.
His face was pale, the skin around his nose pinched and white.
“The bank is closed for the evening,” Derek told the phone, his gaze still fixed on me. “I will have my assistant pull the statements first thing in the morning.”
“That is not going to work,” Arthur said. “We have an emergency board meeting scheduled for eight o’clock tomorrow morning.”
“And we expect you to bring those documents with you,” Roger added. “The actual, unedited transfers.”
“I will be there,” Derek said. “With the complete files.”
“If those files don’t match our internal records, we are calling the authorities,” Marcus said.
