The Price of Silence and the Secrets Served at the Table
“She stole them,” Derek said, pointing a finger at me. “She broke into my home office. She took my personal laptop.”
“Your office is in our shared home, Derek,” I said.
“And the laptop belongs to the company,” I added. “The company that Richard owns fifty-one percent of.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
He looked at the papers, then at his partner, his expression hardening into one of pure disgust.
“You used my login credentials to authorize these transfers,” Richard said.
“No,” Derek said quickly. “Richard, that’s not true. It was an automated system error.”
“An automated system does not copy my digital signature onto a wire transfer of four hundred thousand dollars,” Richard said.
He stood up slowly, holding the papers firmly in his hand.
Eleanor stood with him, her hand gripping his forearm.
“We are leaving,” Richard said.
“Richard, please,” Derek said.
He stepped around the table, trying to block their path to the hallway.
“We can go to the office right now,” Derek said. “We can look at the server logs. I can show you how this was a mistake.”
