“What is the next step?” I asked.

“You need to act as if nothing is wrong,” Annika said. “Let him have his dinner tonight. Let him think he is completely in control.”

“And on Monday?”

“On Monday morning, we file the divorce papers and the petition for emergency asset freezing,” Annika said. “At the exact same time, the firm’s board will receive an anonymous tip containing these transfer logs.”

“He will know it was me,” I said.

“He will be too busy trying to stay out of federal prison to come after you,” she replied. “But you must stay safe this weekend. Do not give him any reason to suspect you.”

“I understand,” I said.

“I will have the final settlement draft ready by tomorrow,” Annika said. “Keep your phone close. Hang up now.”

The line went dead.

I slipped the phone back into my pocket and took a deep breath of the warm, soapy air in the laundry room.

I walked back into the kitchen, where Laura was reducing a red wine sauce in a copper pan.

“Everything smells wonderful, Laura,” I said, trying to smile.
