“We’re going to get through this,” Leo said, looking back at me.

“I know,” I said. “But I’m still scared.”

“They can’t touch us here,” Leo said. “The police know everything now.”

I wanted to believe him, but the image of Josephine’s cold, blue eyes wouldn’t leave my mind.

She had always gotten what she wanted.

She had controlled this town, her family, and my life for three years.

A soft knock came at the door.

My heart jumped into my throat.

I looked at Leo, whose hand immediately went to his pocket.

The door pushed open slowly.

A nurse in green scrubs walked in, carrying a small tray of medication.

“Just checking his vitals, Mrs. Sullivan,” she said with a warm smile.

I let out a long breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“Of course,” I said, stepping back to let her work.

She checked Sam’s temperature and adjusted his IV line.

“He’s doing much better,” the nurse said. “His hydration levels are almost back to normal.”

“Thank you,” I said.

As she left, she closed the door firmly behind her.
