Leo patted his jeans and his jacket.
“No,” he said, panic rising in his eyes. “They’re gone. The SUV key was on that ring.”
The officers escorted Leo down to the parking garage to check on our vehicle.
I sat alone in the hospital bed, listening to the drip of my IV line.
Every shadow in the hallway looked like Josephine coming back for me.
I clutched the rough hospital blanket to my chin.
Outside, the rain turned into sleet, tapping against the thick glass window.
Nearly twenty minutes passed before the door opened again.
Leo walked back in, accompanied by Deputy Miller.
Leo’s face was completely drained of color, his skin looking almost gray under the fluorescent lights.
In his hand, he held his brass key ring and a crumpled piece of white paper.
“We found the car,” Leo said, his voice shaking.
“Was it damaged?” I asked.
“No,” Leo said. “The doors were unlocked. They left the keys sitting on the dashboard.”
He walked over to my bed and smoothed out the crumpled piece of paper on my tray table.
