“She’s lying about the dates to make it look like I was unsupervised during my breakdown,” I said.
“Exactly,” Leo said. “She needs the timeline to fit your alleged psychosis episode.”
“If we can prove you were home, her entire story falls apart,” I said.
“We need the work logs,” Leo said. “Arthur keeps everything.”
“Will he give them to you?” Melanie asked.
“Arthur hates my mother,” Leo said simply. “She tried to get him fired ten years ago when he didn’t give her a discount on city gravel.”
Leo stepped away from the bed, his phone already at his ear.

He walked out into the quiet hallway, his heavy boots squeaking on the linoleum.
I looked at Melanie, who was still standing by the door like a chastised child.
“Why are you helping us now, Melanie?” I asked.
She looked at me, her eyes filling with tears again.
“Because she’s crazy, Grace,” Melanie said. “She’s going to ruin Sam. Just like she ruined us.”
“You helped her do this to me,” I pointed out, my voice flat.
