The Price of Silence and the Betrayal That Tore My Family Apart
“Your husband is making a mistake.”
I stared at the screen, my breath catching in my throat.
Before I could type a reply, the phone rang, the caller ID showing the same restricted number.
I pressed the green button and held the phone to my ear.
“Hello?” I whispered.
“Grace,” a voice said, low and sharp.
It was Melanie.
“Tell Leo to turn around,” she said.
“Where are you?” I demanded, gripping the phone tighter.
“I’m at my apartment, and Leo is on his way,” Melanie said.
I could hear the sound of windshield wipers scraping in the background of her call.
“He thinks he can just demand the money back, but it’s already gone.”
“What did you do with it, Melanie?” I asked, tears stinging my eyes.
“Mother needed it,” Melanie said, her voice shaking slightly. “She had to pay the retainer.”
“The retainer for what?” I asked.
“An attorney,” Melanie said.
She paused, and I could hear her taking a shaky breath.
“A real attorney. Not some public defender.”
“He’s going to destroy you both in court tomorrow.”
