“She did,” Leo said.
He pulled his phone from his pocket.
The screen was cracked, a spiderweb of fractures running across the glass.
He tapped the screen, his thumb moving quickly.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Melanie lives on Grand Avenue,” Leo said. “She has an apartment near the grocery store.”
“Leo, you can’t go there,” I said, standing up. “The investigator just left. If you get into a fight with Melanie, it will look like we are violent.”
“We need that money back, Grace,” Leo said, turning to face me.
“Without it, we can’t hire a lawyer for tomorrow morning.”
“If we go into that courtroom alone, the judge will give Sam to my mother.”

We were entirely unprotected.
Josephine had the system on her side, and she had our money to grease the wheels.
“She must have hired someone expensive,” I said.
“Melanie knows where the money went,” Leo said.
