“I’m fine,” I said, though my fingers were shaking. “We don’t have much time. Elaine will realize we escaped the building within minutes.”

“She will try to flee,” Damon said.

“Not if she thinks she can still get what she wants,” I said.

I pulled my phone from my pocket, my fingers cold against the glass screen.

“What are you doing?” Damon asked.

“Setting the trap,” I said.

I opened my contacts and found Elaine’s private number.

My thumb hovered over the call button for a second before I pressed it.

I put the phone to my ear, listening to the heavy, rhythmic hum of the SUV’s engine.

It rang three times before she picked up.

“Nora?” Elaine’s voice was sharp, laced with a thin veneer of concern that no longer fooled me.

“Elaine, they found me,” I said, letting my voice tremble. “Damon’s men. They broke into the clinic.”

There was a brief pause on the line, the sound of wind rustling in the background on her end.

“Where are you now?” she asked.
