“Harris,” Damon called out to the hallway.

Harris appeared behind him.

“Move them to the safe room in the basement,” Damon ordered. “Now.”

I stood up, holding Leo tightly in my arms.

“Damon, I want answers,” I said, my voice steady despite the terror claws in my chest.

“I will give you answers,” Damon said. “But you need to be safe first.”

The safe room was a reinforced space behind a hidden steel door in the lower levels of the house.

It was warm and well-lit, furnished with comfortable couches and stocked with food and water.

But to me, it felt like a high-tech dungeon.

I sat on the sofa, holding Leo until his eyelids grew heavy and he fell asleep against my chest.

Marlene sat beside me, her eyes closed in silent prayer.

Damon stood near the heavy steel door, looking at the security monitors mounted on the wall.

I laid Leo down on the small cot in the corner, covering him with a thick blanket.

Then, I walked over to Damon.

“Tell me,” I said.
