“Answer it,” Marisol said. “Put it on speaker.”
I pressed the screen and held the phone between us.
“Elena,” a voice said.
It wasn’t Derek.
It was Stephanie.
“I know what you are doing,” Stephanie said, her voice shaking with rage.
“Stephanie, do not call this phone again,” I said.
“You think you’re smart, Elena,” she said. “But you’re ruining lives over a mistake.”
“A mistake?” I said. “He tried to burn me alive.”
“He was trying to save us,” Stephanie spat. “We needed that money.”
Marisol made a gesture with her hand, telling me to keep her talking.
“Where is Derek right now, Stephanie?” I asked.
“He’s where you can’t touch him,” she said. “And if you present those papers to the court, we will make sure everyone knows you were the one who signed the insurance forms.”
“I signed them under duress,” I said.
“The bank doesn’t care about duress,” Stephanie said. “The signatures are yours.”
She paused, and I could hear the sound of windshield wipers in her background.
She was driving.
“We are behind you, Elena,” Stephanie said.
