The Price of Secrets and the Fall of My Abusive Husband
“How did you get out?” Marisol asked.
“I broke the display window with a metal clothing rack,” Sarah said. “That is how I got this scar.”
She pointed to her eye.
“The flying glass was hot, and the fire caught the side of my face before I jumped through,” she said.
I felt a tear slip down my cheek, hot and fast.
“What about the insurance money?” I asked.
Sarah pointed to a bank statement in the folder.
“The insurance company paid out two hundred and eighty thousand dollars,” she said. “It went into a joint account.”
She turned the page to show a wire transfer slip.
“The day after the funds cleared, Derek emptied the account,” Sarah said. “He left the state.”
“Did you go to the police?” Marisol asked.
“I tried,” Sarah said. “But the fire marshal concluded the accelerant could have been from the cleaning supplies I kept in the back.”
She shook her head.
“Derek told the detectives I was unstable,” Sarah said. “He told them I set the fire myself for the payout.”
“And they believed him?” I asked.
