“He told me you were crazy,” she sobbed. “He said you were trying to ruin him and take everything. But I saw the news. I saw the police cars outside his place today.”
“He lied to you, Monica,” I said, looking down at my scarred hands.
“I know,” she whispered. “I don’t want to go to jail for him. He told me to empty the box at the Biscayne branch the second he got arrested.”
“Don’t touch it,” I said. “Where are you now?”
“In my car. Parked near the library on Flagler. Please, Elena, don’t let the police come for me.”
I looked at Marisol and covered the mouthpiece.
“She has his safe deposit keys,” I told her. “She’s terrified.”
Marisol’s eyes narrowed, her legal instincts instantly kicking in.
“Tell her to stay exactly where she is,” Marisol said. “We are coming to get them.”
I relayed the message to Monica and hung up.
I set the phone on the kitchen counter, next to the clear plastic evidence bag.
Inside the bag lay Stephanie’s sleek silver laptop, the screen dark now.
